Schmoker, J.W., , Use of formation-density logs to determine organic-carbon content in Devonian shales of the western Appalachian basin and an additional example based on the Bakken Formation of the Williston basin, in Roen, J.B., and R.C. Kepferle, eds., Petroleum geology of the Devonian and Mississippian black shale of eastern North. Steep (>75°), narrow (< mm), calcite-sealed fractures are described in the Barnett Shale, north-central Texas, the Woodford Formation, west Texas and the New Albany Shale in the Illinois Basin. These fractures are weak because calcite cement grows mostly over non-carbonate grains and there is no crystal bond between cement and wall rock.

Annual report, October 1, Septem Black shale reservoirs may react similarly and desorb methane in the presence of adsorbing CO 2. If this is the case, black shales may serve as an excellent sink for CO 2 and have the added benefit of serving to enhance natural-gas production.

A bibliography of Devonian shale has been compiled to identify previous work and provide supporting. Several recent studies have evaluated the behavior of some constituents during weathering of metalliferous Devonian black shale in the eastern United States including the New Albany Shale in eastern Kentucky (Petsch et al.,Petsch et al., a, Petsch et al., b, Petsch et al.,Jaffe et al.,Kolowith and Berner, [6] The Woodford Shale was sampled in the Arbuckle Mountains of Oklahoma, and the New Albany Shale was collected from an exposure near Clay City, Kentucky.

At least anoxic conditions prevailed during accumulation of much of the Sunbury Shale and the upper part of the Cleveland Member, and possibly euxinic conditions for the Sunbury.

Following studies of Furnish and Knapp (), who reported late Morrowan ammonoids from the Kendrick Shale Member of the Breathitt Formation, the boundary between the Morrowan and Atokan Series in eastern Kentucky is tentatively placed between the Kendrick and the younger Magoffin Member of the Breathitt Formation, which is Atokan in age.

Shale is the most common sedimentary rock, accounting for about 70 percent of the rock in the Earth's crust.

Shale is a fine-grained rock made from compacted mud and clay. The defining characteristic of shale is its ability to break into layers or fissility. Black and gray shale are common, but the rock can occur in any color.

Selected reports on the geological framework related to the assessment of the hydrocarbon potential of the Devonian and Mississippian black shale of the Appalachian, Illinois, and Michigan bulletin is the result of studies undertaken for the Morgantown Technology.

Description. The Marcellus consists predominantly of black shale and a few limestone beds and concentrations of iron pyrite (Fe S 2) and siderite (FeCO 3).

Like most shales, it tends to split easily along the bedding plane, a property known as fissility. Lighter colored shales in the upper portion of the formation tend to split into small thin-edged fragments after exposure. Shale formations generally contain a certain amount of water, and the occurrence of water can strongly affect the free gas content and gas storage capacity within shale.
